Writers and readers must meet. When I turn to the last page of a book I have truly loved, or finish an article that has moved me deeply, I go briefly into a kind of mourning, wishing the story would continue, wishing the journalist or author was a terrific friend of mine who I could just call up on the phone whenever I felt like it.
